Mohs micrographic surgery provides a cure rate of up to 99.5% for certain types of skin cancers. It is the most precise method for removal of all cancerous tissue, while sparing the greatest amount of healthy tissue. This is especially important for skin cancer removal in areas where maximum preservation of healthy tissue is desirable for cosmetic and functional purposes. In Mohs Surgery the physician serves as surgeon, pathologist and reconstructive surgeon.
Mohs micrographic surgery is very useful for large growths, lesions with indistinct borders, tumors near vital functional or cosmetic structures, and cancers for which other forms of therapy have failed. The Mohs surgeon uses a microscope and special mapping technique that pinpoints the cancerous areas. Although no surgeon or technique can guarantee 100% chance of cure, the Mohs technique enjoys the highest cure rate of all treatments for selected skin cancers.
